Quilt Shop Excursion

Today my coworker and I went on an excursion to the local quilt shop. It must have been a funny sight -- two computer geeks walking into the quilt shop wielding our fancy cell phones and a digital camera. We told the store owner that we were writing fabric recognition software and wanted to see if our software actually worked by taking photos of her fabric and seeing if we get correct results. She obliged so we had some fun.
Here are some of the pictures that we took.

For the photo above, I realized how important lighting is. The fabric actually looks a lot more orange than that photo makes it. Good, natural lighting is important for correct color and matching in Find My Fabric. Our search engine relies a lot on color to find a good match.

I thought this fabric looked cool, its from the Aster Manor collection from Moda. I took the bolt off of the shelf, turned it sideways, and snapped the photo. The distance from the top to the bottom of the photo is the width of the bolt. I learned that good camera focus is important so that the detail of the photo is picked up correctly our search engine. Our search engine looks at texture as well as objects and shapes to determine a good match.

I learned a few things from this photo. The edges of the photo are darker than the center. Its important that the colors are even throughout the photo for an accurate match. Also, the object in the center needs to be angled correctly for the best match.

Another nice fabric print from the Aster Manor collection.
Our excursion was successful! We were able to prove that our search engine really will find the fabric you're looking for, provided the photo you upload is taken correctly.
